Abstract:

The Northern Appalachian Coal Basin, as discussed in this report, covers approximately 43,700 sq mi in parts of Ohio, Pennsylvania, Maryland, West Virginia, and Kentucky. Calculations on the major coals in the basin showed an estimated total resource for this basin of 578 billion tons of coal. Data collected from gassy mines, DOE/MRCP test projects, and U.S. Bureau of Mines studies indicate that these coals contain an estimated 61 Tcf of coalbed methane. An elliptical area covering about 4,500 sq mi around the southwestern corner of Pennsylvania and in northern West Virginia has been designated as having the highest coalbed methane potential.
