Abstract:

The Warrior Basin is an area of 35,000 sq mi astride the Alabama-Mississippi state boundaries. This southern extension of the Appalachian basin contains Paleozoic sediments overlain in part by Cretaceous Coastal Plain deposits. The Pennsylvanian System is represented by the Pottsville Formation and contains all the estimated 35 billion tons of coal resources in the basin. Most of the coal is found in 20 seams forming seven coal groups. Approximately 20 billion tons are considered to be present at depths conducive to commercial methane development. Measured methane contents over 500 cubic feet/ton are commonly obtained in several beds, especially in Jefferson and Tuscaloosa counties, Alabama. At present commercial development is limited to those counties and chiefly to the Mary Lee Coal group. The methane resource is estimated to be between 7 and 10 trillion cubic feet.
