Abstract:
The gravity method is extremely important in Basin and Range exploration for subtle fault/truncation traps. In fact, significant gravity anomalies exist over all three oil fields in Railroad Valley: Eagle Springs, Trap Spring, and the more recent apparent discovery north of Eagle Springs. Primarily, Railroad Valley oil production is from Cretaceous-Eocene and Oligocene reservoirs in combination fault/truncation traps on synclinal embayments on the downthrown sides of the major basin-bounding faults. Such hydrocarbon trapping embayments represent relative "thicks" in the Tertiary isopach. Local gravity minima occur over the Tertiary "thicks," and linear gravity gradients occur over the major basin-bounding faults. Proper combinations of these gravity features indic te petroleum prospects in the Cretaceous-Eocene and Oligocene reservoirs.
