Abstract:

Analysts can quantitatively and systematically compare the geology of relatively unexplored basins with that of maturely explored, "analog" basins. This can be a useful tool for assessing the unexplored basins' potential for future hydrocarbon discoveries. This paper shows how two important basin areas, California and Saudi Arabia, can be compared. Geologists and geophysicists can use the techniques discussed as an exploration checklist to help recognize and isolate potential hydrocarbon-producing areas.
