Abstract:
Exploration has been active in the Norwegian North Sea for almost 20 years, resulting in recoverable reserves that are estimated at 1.5 billion cu m (9.5 billion bbl) of oil and 2.5 trillion cu m (88.2 trillion cu ft) of gas. The 25 fields with reserves of more than 100 million bbl of oil equivalent each, together account for 98% of the total recoverable reserves. Seven fields are giant, with more than 1 billion bbl each. The distribution of oil and gas fields is intimately linked with the Mesozoic rift system of the Viking and Central grabens that, in turn, controlled the distribution and maturation of the Upper Jurassic source rock interval. In the Norwegian North Sea, hydrocarbon discoveries to date occur in four forms of traps: structural-unconformity, salt-supported, compression-related and stratigraphic traps.
