Abstract:

The mid-Norwegian continental margin, bordered oceanward by Tertiary oceanic crust, has a thick sedimentary sequence ranging in age from Paleozoic to present. The Jurassic contains two source rocks, one gas- and one oil-prone, and two sandstones of fair to excellent reservoir characteristics. The structures are related to Middle and Late Jurassic tectonisms, capped by Upper Jurassic and Cretaceous shales and marls. Exploration drilling started in 1980. A number of discoveries have been made, and production is expected in the 1990s.
