ABSTRACT

The technology of geographic information systems (GIS) has rapidly evolved from its early beginnings, moving from the early stages of computer mapping to the more elaborate and informative notions of spatial database management, spatial modeling, and spatial dialog and reasoning. Having penetrated many disciplines, the influence of this technology is poised for further expansion as the concepts of data mining, predictive modeling, and dynamic simulation are incorporated. The geoscience arena--particularly the upstream operations of the petroleum industry--provides many opportunities for successful deployment of these new GIS ideas and capabilities.
