ABSTRACT
This chapter details the evolution of geologic mapping, from the earliest days of computer-aided drafting and automated cartography to the most recent and advanced applications of geographic information systems (GIS). The technical aspects of GIS are reviewed and discussed, and the developmental progression to geoscience information systems (GSIS) and associated modeling approaches is presented. Future trends in GIS technology are also identified, particularly as they impact petroleum exploration and production activities. Enhanced capabilities in mapping and in information access, integration, and management are shown to depend on successful implementation of additional Internet and Web-based functionality.
