ABSTRACT
Many oil and gas companies and related service entities are discovering the spatial nature and true value of their exploration and production data sets as they begin to integrate geographic information systems (GIS) into the management of their everyday business functions. This chapter describes the path that many GIS practitioners have shared in getting to this point of integrated GIS implementation. It also discusses the role of the GIS vendor community, exposes the latest in technology developments, and presents the direction these developments are likely to take in the foreseeable future. Finally, samples of several applications developed by major petroleum industry players are referenced, thereby illustrating the commercial value of GIS and explaining the consequent expansion in take-up that the technology is currently enjoying.
