ABSTRACT

This chapter relates the cooperative efforts of the Environmental Systems Research Institute, Inc. (ESRI) and the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) to use modern geographic information systems (GIS) technology to distribute federal geological and earth resources data, along with the tools necessary to display and analyze such data. Largely constructed using the functionality of ESRI's MapObjects software, Livengood GeoExplorer is the name given to the desktop GIS product developed through this joint effort. Options for developing a desktop GIS product are discussed, as are the applications adapted for use in this specific project.
