ABSTRACT

Depending on the specific situation, public domain and inexpensive geographic information system (GIS) software packages can be effectively applied to petroleum exploration and development problems. Several of these packages are reviewed and compared here. Descriptions of the packages are provided, along with examples of some of the graphic output that can be produced. In addition, other sources of information pertaining to GIS, particularly those available on-line, are listed.
