ABSTRACT
Depending on the specific situation, public domain and
inexpensive geographic information system (GIS) software packages can be effectively
applied to petroleum exploration and development problems. Several of these packages are
reviewed and compared here. Descriptions of the packages are provided, along with examples
of some of the graphic output that can be produced. In addition, other sources of
information pertaining to GIS, particularly those available on-line, are listed.
