Abstract:
Estimates have been made of carbonate-sediment production by the striped parrot fish Scarus croicensis Bloch and two common Caribbean echinoids, Diadema antillarum Philippi and Echinometra lucunter (L.), on the basis of an analysis of stomach contents and rate of feeding. The striped-parrot-fish population studied at Isla Pico Feo in Panama produced 0.49 kg/m2/year of carbonate sediment. The urchins Diadema and Echinometra studied in St. Croix, U.S. Virgin Islands, produced 4.6 km/m2/year and 3.9 kg/m2/year, respectively.
