The first commercial oil field in Mississippi was discovered near the small town of Tinsley in Yazoo County, in 1939, and nearly 500 wells have been drilled on and around the Tinsley structure since that time

Cumulative oil production from the Upper Cretaceous Woodruff, Perry, Stevens, Lammons, McGraw, and Brumfield sandstones was 195,848,466 bbl through December 31, 1974. During October 1974, daily production from 167 wells was 6,757 bbl of oil, and 57 wells injected 50,493 bbl of water per day into five different waterflood projects. The first full-scale waterflood was begun at Tinsley field in 1968.
