The Edison oil field, 12 miles southeast of Bakersfield, Kern County, California, was discovered in 1934.
Oil is produced from several sands, the lower of which have been grouped together and designated as the "Lower Duff" zone. The lower sands are oil reservoirs of the stratigraphic trap type.
