Abstract:
Basins which have gas-saturated sections exhibit a characteristic pressure profile. They may be subnormally or supernormally pressured, but never normally pressured. The pressure profile of numerous gas-saturated sections in North America has been documented by constructing pressure-depth plots. The approach here is descriptive. Interpretation of the data has not yet yielded a unique solution.
Examples of gas saturation in subnormally pressured Upper and Lower Cretaceous rocks of Alberta, Canada, and Lower Silurian rocks of eastern Ohio, U.S.A., and supernormally pressured Tertiary and Upper Cretaceous rocks of Wyoming, U.S.A., are presented. These pressure-depth plots should help identify similar gas-saturated sections in other petroleum provinces.
