Abstract:

Marine Jurassic sedimentary formations of this area can be correlated tentatively with those lying beneath the southern plains of Alberta and in the foothills to the southwest. The Fernie group consists of dark marine shales and sandstones with minor amounts of limestone and chert.

Southeast of Sturgeon Lake limestones and cherts become prominent in the lowest part of the group. The distribution of these beds has been influenced by late Jurassic or early Cretaceous erosion, which truncated the strata to the north and northeast. They lie on an erosional surface which cuts across the top of both Triassic and Paleozoic strata. The equivalents of the Nordegg member, the Poker Chip shale, and the Rock Creek member can be recognized. The constant lithology of the Nordegg member permits well-defined correlations.
