Abstract:

Continuous analysis of 623.5 m of cored samples from the three holes at Site 493 resulted in the recognition of eight distinctive palynostratigraphic zones and three unconformities. The early Miocene to the Holocene assemblage succession documents vegetation changes on the mainland in the last 20 million years. Vegetational shifts are due in part to climatic fluctuations that occurred in the region. Correlation with the nannoplankton zonation and magnetostratigraphy is fair to good.
