Chapter 9: Creating Spatial-Based Paleogeography from Plate Reconstructions: A Methodology
Abstract
Paleogeographic maps are important for understanding and visualizing past depositional environments. Such maps integrate plate tectonic reconstructions with other geologic data such as well logs, seismic facies, and facies maps. By using spatial-based software, the reconstruction and cartographic processes can be streamlined and provide a more robust paleogeographic map suite. This chapter establishes a methodology for creating paleoenvironmental and paleogeographic maps using an existing plate tectonic reconstruction model and an extensive database based on geographic information systems.
