Editors's Note: Before his death in late 2011, Gerry Friedman submitted a paper to this volume that provided a people-oriented historical perspective on the evolution of the Cambrian–Early Ordovician geology of central New York. The editors present this Historical Note as an extended abstract-sized component in this volume. Since the original publication of much of this work, the stratigraphic nomenclature of this region has evolved. See the chapters by Landing and by Smith in this volume for further descriptions of the stratigraphy of this area. The editors thank Ed Landing and the librarians at Chevron and the New York Geological Survey for their detailed assistance in validating the references of this note.
