ABSTRACT

A method is presented to discriminate on Previous HitwellboreNext Hit image logs natural open fractures from far more abundant drilling-induced fractures in horizontal wells in the Dan chalk field, offshore Denmark. The method recognizes that drilling-induced fractures are predominantly shear failures in a preferred orientation relative to the Previous HitwellboreTop, whereas natural fractures are confined to a limited strike range determined by the regional stress field.
