Abstract:

The PRIMES (Petroleum Resources Information Management and Evaluation System) has been developed for assessments of oil and gas plays. The basic elements for PRIMES are a pool size distribution and a number of pools distribution. From these elements, individual pool sizes can be estimated. The remaining play potential can then be obtained from the undiscovered individual pool sizes.

The superpopulation play model approach is employed by PRIMES for making resource estimations. One of its main capabilities is enabling assessors to match reserves against estimated pool sizes; this provides a basis from which to estimate remaining potentials and to validate the input data. The Rimbey-Meadowbrook reef play from Alberta is examined in this paper and used as a guide to the procedure employed by PRIMES.
