Abstract:

The future will bring greater exploitation of heavy oils in low-cohesion, compressible reservoirs. For these deposits, it is inadequate to assume conventional behavior: Geomechanical parameters are absolutely critical to design of correct treatment. Unfortunately, these reservoirs are exceedingly difficult to sample without core damage; therefore, determination of mechanical properties from geophysical logs is important. The best devices for this are the density and sonic logs. If multispaced sonic logs are available with full wavetrain recording, the sonic data may be correlated to "static" geomechanical parameters.
