Book Title: SG 25: Exploration for Heavy Crude Oil and Natural Bitumen

Article/Chapter: Recovery Methods for Heavy Oil and Tar Sands: Section VI. Recovery

Subject Group: Oil--Methodology and Concepts

Spec. Pub. Type: Studies in Geology

Pub. Year: 1987

Author(s): J. J. George Stosur, J. A. Slater

Abstract:

The paper reviews the existing and potential recovery methods for heavy-oil and tar sand resources with emphasis on those methods that are now commercial, i.e., steamflooding, in situ combustion, and surface mining of tar sands.

The outlook for heavy-oil production in the United States is very promising. Ultimate recovery is estimated to range from 4.2 to 10.5 billion barrels. Actual recovery of heavy oil would be even higher because some of the heavy oil is produced by primary and secondary methods, which are not included in the above figures.
