Fracture zones and faults in Cretaceous limestone of the area suggest that crustal extension occurred prior to eruption of the Tertiary El Papalote volcanics. Volcanic rocks are of two eruptive periods; the older (>45 m.y. B.P.) consisting of altered rhyolite and/or dacite flows, flow breccia and lithic tuff, the younger (<45 m. y. B. P.) of rhyolite ash flows with minor basalt and andesite flows.
