Abstract:
The mineral analysis of sediments involves preparation of the sample, that is, disaggregation and clarification of the grains, concentration by heavy liquids, or other means, of the rare accessory minerals ("heavy minerals"), splitting down and mounting of the several mineral fractions so separated, identification, and determination of mineral frequencies by estimate or count. The more commonly used methods for such a program of study are herein outlined with a few leading references to the literature.
A few remarks on the nature and causes of variations in mineral composition, especially "mineral gradients," disclosed by quantitative methods, conclude this article.
