Abstract:

An attempt has been made to correlate deep-water and shallow-water Black Sea deposits of late Quaternary and Holocene ages. The stratigraphic correlation is based on the presence of shallow-water mollusk shells in four cores collected by R/V Atlantis II in the spring of 1969. It can be shown that mollusk shells permit a stratigraphic classification of deep-basin sediments which conforms, within certain limits, to a classification scheme based solely on petrographic or micropaleontologic evidence.
