Abstract:
On the basis of existing knowledge, a comparison of transform faults in oceanic areas with strike-slip faults in continental rocks shows more differences than similarities. However, analysis of the degree of difference and similarity between such faults is hampered by the uncertain genetic and mechanistic connotations of the phrase "transform fault," and by the need for more information about such faults. Such information is essential for appraisals of applications of plate tectonics to geologic interpretations of continental rocks and structures.
