Abstract:
The large variation of natural remanent magnetism (NRM) limits the use of NRM as a diagnostic tool in making time correlations. Each unit of a given rock sequence will be either normally or reversely oriented. Because of the natural variance of NRM intensity, any such sequence will appear identical with one of two possible theoretical binary (i.e., two-valued) series. This fact greatly enhances the possibility of making faulty time correlations between widely differing sequences.
