ABSTRACT

The Yibal Field, located in northern Oman, is a mature oil field, with a current total of 436 wells, from which about half of the ultimately recoverable reserves have been produced. Some 100 Shuaiba reservoir production wells have been preselected using structural and amplitude interpretations of a 3-D seismic survey acquired in 1988. The seismic data were integrated with petrophysical, geological, and production models to arrive at optimal well locations and trajectories.

The results of these wells, many of which are horizontal, have been very encouraging in terms of production and recovery improvements and demonstrate the success of the approach. Top Shuaiba seismic attribute data have been shown to have high predictive value for reservoir porosity, hydrocarbon distribution, and production behavior.

New 3-D data were acquired in 1993 to improve the structural model, identify remaining unswept oil, and enable real-time reservoir visualization. Although not yet fully processed and evaluated, interpretations of time-lapse effects in reservoir fluid distribution are presented.
