Sand and Limestone of Tulsa County

Tommy B. Thompson

Abstract

From the standpoint of availability of construction materials, Tulsa County is indeed fortunate (Fig. 1). Extensive sand deposits occur as alluvial (unconsolidated material) and terrace deposits along the Arkansas River and Bird Creek. The lack of gravel in these fluvial (river transported and deposited) sediments is offset by the fact that abundant limestone is available and adjacent to the metropolitan area. In order for continued growth and construction, city planners should consider zoning restrictions in the areas of sand and limestone production so that these industries can continue development.
