Oil and Gas Production Summary of the Uinta Basin

Keith Clem

Abstract

The purpose of this paper is to summarize present petroleum production in the Uinta Basin, with reference to the geologic structure, stratigraphy, and petroleum characteristics. Present production in the basin is from Pennsylvanian through Tertiary strata; with the Uinta, Green River, Wasatch, Flagstaff, North Horn, Frontier, Morrison, Phosphoria, Park City, and the Weber formations being productive (Fig. 1, Table 1).

The Uinta Basin is the second largest basin in Utah. The first reported production in the basin was gas from the Ashley Valley field in 1925. The first oil production was from the same field in 1948. Tertiary strata accounts for 85 percent of present production (Table 2). Drilling activity is centered in the Castle Peak-Pariette Bench and Altamont-Bluebell producing areas. Soon, the area of production will be essentially continuous throughout this portion of the basin (Fig. 2).
