General Soils Distribution in Western Utah

A. R. Southard, T. H. Furst

Abstract

This paper describes very broad groups of soils of the Western half of Utah. The soils are generally divided among three main groups based on elevation: Below 5,500 ft, from 5,500 ft to about 8,000 ft, and above 8,000 ft. These groupings combine some soils which would not ordinarily be combined due to climatic differences.

At the order level the dark-colored soils are Mollisols and Alfisols, the light-colored soils are Aridisols and Entisols. Publication scale of the General Previous HitSoilTop Map of Utah is 1:1,000,000. On the photographs of the map 1 in. = about 48 mi.
