Revised Upper Triassic Stratigraphy in the San Rafael Swell, Utah

Spencer G. Lucas

Abstract

As much as 360 ft (120 m) of nonmarine Upper Triassic strata exposed in the San Rafael Swell, Utah, belong to the Carnian-Norian Chinle Group. Previous stratigraphic analysis assigned these strata to the Temple Mountain, Moss Back and Church Rock Members of the Chinle Formation. However, revised stratigraphy of the Upper Triassic strata in the San Rafael Swell assigns these strata to six formations of the Chinle Group. Thus, Chinle Group strata in the Swell consist of the Temple Mountain, Shinarump (Moss Back of most previous authors), Cameron, Petrified Forest, Moss Back and Rock Point Formations. These units represent three depositional sequences bounded by unconformities. Chinle Group strata in the Swell thus conform to the sequence stratigraphy of the Chinle Group evident throughout the western United States.
