Geophysical Analyses to Map Concealed Faulting in the Wasatch Fault Zone in Northeastern Provo, Utah County, Utah

Interpreted gravity and magnetic data from surveys conducted across the Wasatch fault zone in northeastern Provo, Utah, were used to map four larger faults along nearly 1 mile of the Provo segment of the Wasatch fault zone. Seismic refraction surveys also were conducted at selected locations, and the interpreted seismic sections correlate quite well with the interpreted gravity and magnetic data. Interpretations of the individual data sets for each site were integrated to eliminate spurious readings and to strengthen the interpretations. The interpreted geophysical data verify the locations of four known faults in northeastern Provo and extend the mapping of each of these faults more than 1,350 ft (412 meters) farther north and more than 450 ft (137 meters) farther south than previously known from surface mapping.

Information derived from this study provides useful data for planning and development of roads, homes, and other buildings within the Wasatch fault zone. The characteristics of subsurface deformation can be used to gain a better understanding of the potential for surface faulting and rupture at a given site, as well as assist in planning appropriate site development and remedial measures to help mitigate hazards associated with high-magnitude earthquakes.
