Abstract
Lineaments of Northern Alabama and Possible Regional Implications
Abstract
The more than 2000 lineaments delineated from LANDSAT-1 imagery of northern Alabama generally fall into orthogonal systems that are similar in orientation across the state. The lineaments show poor correlation with known jointing but somewhat better correlation with normal faults. Two lineament complexes exhibit relationships to Appalachian structure, mineralization, geochemical and geophysical anomalies and seismicity. Regional extension of the lineament complexes reveals a possible relationship to a deep-seated crustal fault zone that crosses southeastern North America and extends along the northeast edge of the Bahama Platform.
