Abstract
The Cartesian histogram plot has been found to be the most advantageous way of representing strike directions of linear elements, as it 1) allows selection of a more exact “characteristic” strike for each set of such elements, 2) allows separation of separate distinct sets of small angular separation, and 3) allows better recognition of minor sets. These advantages facilitate comparison of studies of different areas, or of different studies of the same area.
The Cartesian histogram plot, furthermore, when properly constructed, is a close approximation to the “perfect” data set formed by a very large number of (unbiased) elements divided into very small angular segments. It therefore introduces a minimum of bias in the representation process.
