Type Section for the Uppermost Bell Canyon Formation in the Central Delaware Basin of West Texas

Phil Winner

Abstract

Previous type sections in the uppermost Bell Canyon formation have been based on studies of producing oil fields. Most producing Bell Canyon fields in the central Delaware Basin represent stratigraphic anomalies (channel fill deposits) and, as such, do not always display a typical stratigraphic section. By correlating stratigraphic sections in dry holes, a more typical section is defined. The type section presented here is useful for relating Bell Canyon fields to each other and thereby providing a framework for prospect mapping in the uppermost Bell Canyon.
