Proposed Mud-Logging Analysis Techniques in the Delaware Mountain Group of the Delaware Basin

R. P. Murphy, R. C. Reedy, K. E. Cranston

Abstract

In recent years it has become obvious that reservoir oil and water saturations in Delaware Mountain Group (DMG) sandstones of the Delaware Basin are not segregated by clearly definable contacts. In some cases, as a result of perforating and/or acidizing complete sandstone intervals, the production of formation water has grossly exceeded calculated predictions based on electric log data. This could lead to uneconomical operation and possible premature depletion of these reservoirs.

This paper is the summation of a study to investigate the feasibility of adapting advanced mud logging techniques and evaluations to complex reservoirs typical of the DMG.
