The Pennsylvanian-Permian Boundary in Shelf Areas of the North Platform of the Midland Basin

A. M. Reid, S. J. Mazzullo

Abstract

Re-examination of available fusulinids in portions of the shelf sequence on the North Platform of the Midland Basin indicates that the Pennsylvanian-Permian boundary occurs lower than previously recognized. By these revised correlations, the Canyon-Cisco section is shown to comprise an erosionally-thinned sequence of carbonates and colluvium. The overlying Wolfcampian similarly includes a thick section of platform carbonates and colluvial deposits in Early to Middle Wolfcampian strata, the top of which had previously been referred to as the Middle Wolfcamp unconformity.
