Abstract
Radiometric Maps of the Permian Basin: Surface Uranium and Potassium Activity Derived from Nure Progrm
Abstract
Maps showing uranium and potassium background radioactivity above the Permian Basin were constructed from data collected under the National Uranium Resource Evaluation (NURE) program. NURE data from different contractors, with different characteristics and inadequate edge fit, have been compiled into maps which provide a coherent view of the radiometrics of the Permian Basin on a regional scale. These maps, as well as other data available in NURE program reports, can be an important adjunct in surface radiometric mapping for petroleum exploration. Such large scale features as igneous bodies, e.g., the Davis Mountains volcanic field, and major surface faults, e.g., the Brokeoff Mountains, appear as significant positive radiomatric anomalies on maps at this scale. Such smaller features as playas, rivers, mines and cities may be discerned on the original NURE quadrangle maps. Thus these maps can be used in a variety of studies involving such fields as geochemistry, groundwater hydrology, pollution, and public health in the area of the Permian Basin.
