Abstract
Geomorphology and Surface-Water Hydrology of Part of the Hueco Basin, West Texas
Abstract
Recent history of arroyos in the Hueco Basin study area has been dominated by downcutting interrupted by periods of alluviation. The current period of incision began less than about 920 yr ago. Most geomorphic work is done by runoff resulting from intense rainfall, but most flows are confined to ephemeral channels, and hydrologic modeling indicates that much of the study area would not be inundated by a 100-yr flood. Parts of the ground surface at the study area have been largely unchanged for at least the last 900 yr. Locally, surface fissures have formed as a result of tensional stress, piping, and collapse.
