Dockum (Upper Triassic) Stratigraphy and Nomenclature

Spencer G. Lucas, Orin J. Anderson

Abstract

Upper Triassic strata in west Texas belong to the Dockum Formation of the Chinle Group consisting of five members (ascending order): Camp Springs, Colorado City (replaces Iatan), Tecovas, Trujillo, and Bull Canyon. Colorado City Member is introduced here to replace the preoccupied name Iatan. An alternative stratigraphic nomenclature advocated by Lehman violates stratigraphic principles and represents a unique nomenclature for Upper Triassic strata in west Texas. Furthermore, Lehman fails to recognize lateral facies and thickness changes and thus envisions a layer-cake stratigraphy of the Upper Triassic strata throughout west Texas that is inconsistent with the bio- and lithostratigraphy. We prefer a Dockum stratigraphic nomenclature that is more consistent with previous usage and one that reflects actual stratigraphic relationships.
