Naturally Fractured Reservoirs – Why Do Some Reservoirs Recover More than Others?

Richard Baker, Shelin Chugh, Steve Wong

Abstract

This discussion compares three naturally fractured reservoirs which have been miscible flooded and waterflooded:

  • Wizard Lake (vertical flood)

  • Weyburn / Midale (horizontal flood)

  • Spraberry (horizontal flood)

The ultimate recovery due to an injection scheme can vary considerably, as will be shown. In thick reservoirs with intensely fractured rock and high matrix permeability rock, the recovery factors can be very high (>70% OOIP).
