Abstract
Wolfcamp Stratigraphic Objectives in the Permian Basin: A Case Study from Pecos County, Texas
Abstract
Many exploratory objectives remain in the Permian basin, especially stratigraphic targets. Numerous stratigraphic oil and gas reservoir targets have often been overlooked, or missed, for various reasons. Today’s technologies, integrated with thoughtful geological and geophysical processes, will allow many new oil and gas reservoirs to be discovered and developed.
A stratigraphic trend in Pecos County, Texas is used to illustrate how technological advances have been applied to envision a concept, image an objective, and develop stratigraphic oil and gas reserves. A “Wolfcamp Reef” play in Pecos County was developed utilizing the integration of geology and geophysics. Through this integration, a focused exploration and development program has resulted in twenty-four producers, including twelve new field discoveries, seven development wells, and five dry holes for an overall success rate of 79%. Through January, 2003, and as a result of the program efforts, the Wolfcamp reservoir objective has produced over 638 MBO and 8,226 MMCFG since the first well was drilled in January, 1998.
