Borehole Imaging in the Permian Basin

Lee Sanders, Kevan Fuchs

Abstract

Current borehole imaging applications in the Permian Basin combine information derived from both the image log and conventional open hole logs as an integral part of the formation evaluation process. The high resolution of the imaging tools provides digital values that can be transformed into a curve format that allows for a detailed analysis of the geological events as reflected on the borehole wall. This method of micro-resistivity analysis can then be used in defining depositional facies in sedimentary rocks, ranking the intensity of naturally occurring fractures and understanding the petrophysical properties that define hydrocarbon producing zones.
