Sub-Provinces of the Delaware Mountain Group. Implications of Sediment Source, Structural Complexities and Deep-Seated Structural Control in the Delaware Basin

Robert C. Trentham

Abstract

The Delaware Sands of the southern and western Delaware Basin are lightly explored and poorly understood. Cores recovered from 5 wells in southern Reeves and southern Culberson Counties are used to demonstrate a variety of depositional, diagenetic and tectonic features and overprints. The presence of thick, reservoir quality sands; faults cutting the Bell Canyon interval; doubly terminated evaporite crystals on the Ramsey Sand and oil stained porosity at the Lamar/Castile transition all represent unique, or perhaps not so unique, occurrences. Despite the lack of exploration success, the conclusion that must be drawn is that although complex, the Bell Canyon Formation in the southern and western Delaware Basin is worthy of additional study and exploration.
