Case Study of the Signal Peak Field, a Wolfcampian Submarine Fan
Abstract
Located south of Coahoma in Howard Co., Texas, the Signal Peak Field presently covers approximately 13,000 acres (20 Sq/Mi). The field is an excellent example of oil and gas stratigraphically trapped within submarine-fan sandstones. The field is situated on a monocline, and hydrocarbons are trapped by the updip and lateral pinch out of the sandstones. The reservoir rock is generally characterized on electric logs by erratic sequences of thin, interbedded sandstones and shales. The reservoir is predominately composed of fine and very fine, low porosity, argillaceous sandstone. Reservoir facies geometry of layered thickening and thinning sandstone sequences is consistent with an advancing submarine fan system. Commercial levels of production from this tight sandstone were not possible until improvements were made in fracture stimulation technology. Ultimate recovery from this field
will depend largely upon continued improvements in fracture technology.
