Reservoir Characterization from Multi-Component Seismic Data in the Drinkard Formation of Vacuum Field, Lea County, New Mexico

Michael A. Raines, Tom Davis

Abstract

The Leonardian-aged Drinkard Formation in the Vacuum Field of Lea County, New Mexico produces from a patch-reef environment along the edge of the Northwest Shelf of the Permian Basin. Analysis of core data indicates that small scale fractures are present to varying degrees in the formation and that some are open. Production data indicates that fractures likely contribute to well productivity differently in various areas of the field.

As part of a larger study, a 3-D multi-component seismic survey was shot over a portion of the Vacuum Field. Analysis of the Leonardian section of the survey indicates that changes in the relative speed of fast and slow shear wave velocities correspond to fracture intensity and short term fluid deliverability. Additionally, the ratio of Shear wave to compressional wave velocities seem to correspond to gross porosity distribution (and facies type) and long term productivity.
