The Delaware Basin Barnett Shale: The Next Big Shale Play?

David A. Prose

Abstract

The Barnett Shale in the Delaware Basin is a thick, organic-rich and thermally mature section located in Reeves, Culberson, and Pecos counties, Texas. Regional cross sections indicate a thick section of high resistivity black shale exists throughout the study area and extends northward into Eddy Co. New Mexico. Numerous sample, mud gas, and drilling shows occur throughout the entire Barnett section, which is 500’-1,000’ thick. The area in the last year has become an extremely active lease play, and could be a resource area equivalent to the Fort Worth Basin.
