Petroleum Resources of the Lower Brushy Canyon, Secretary of the Interior’s Potash Area, Southeast New Mexico

Patrick Walsh

Abstract

Lower Brushy Canyon sandstone reservoirs provide oil and gas production along submarine channels that trend nearly perpendicularly to structural contours. These sand trends have significant future potential that can be exploited in concert with mining activities and legislation protecting potash resources in the Secretary of the Interior’s Potash Area (SPA), eastern Eddy and western Lea Counties, New Mexico. Depth to lower Brushy Canyon production ranges from approximately 6000 to 8700’ in the SPA. An interpreted net sand thickness map for the lower Brushy Canyon indicates that more than 50% of the SPA has lower Brushy Canyon potential, with less than 10% of this potential area developed. Most drilling in the last 10-15 years has extended existing pools with little new exploration. Exploration along depositional axes may lead to new lower Brushy Canyon discoveries.
